Weekly Rules Section and Quiz
This week we cover the options for a ball in a LATERAL WATER HAZARD (Red Stakes and/or lines)

26-1. Relief For Ball In Water Hazard

It is a question of fact whether a ball that has not been found after having been struck toward a water hazard is in the hazard. In the absence of knowledge or virtual certainty that a ball struck toward a water hazard, but not found, is in the hazard, the player must proceed under Rule 27-1.
If a ball is found in a water hazard or if it is known or virtually certain that a ball that has not been found is in the water hazard (whether the ball lies in water or not), the player may under penalty of one stroke:
a. Proceed under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1 by playing a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or
b. Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped; or
c. As additional options available only if the ball last crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard, drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than (i) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or (ii) a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.
When proceeding under this Rule, the player may lift and clean his ball or substitute a ball.
(Prohibited actions when ball is in a hazard – see Rule 13-4)

You now see there is a 3rd option with a LATERAL WATER HAZARD which is “C.”

RULE   27-2.Provisional Ball

ANSWER to Last Weeks RULES QUIZ
Before playing a provisional ball, the player must
A.) search for his original ball.
B.) place an identifying mark on the provisional ball.
C.) announce his intention to play a provisional ball.
D.) announce the brand and model of the ball to his opponent, marker or a fellow-competitor.

The CORRECT ANSWER is:
C.) announce his intention to play a provisional ball.

B & D could have been a reasonable answer as well, BUT the 1st thing to do is announce your intention to play a provisional ball. Please MAKE SURE that you ALWAYS do this. Saying, “I’m going to hit another one” or “I’d better reload” or anything other than “I am hitting a provisional ball” is not acceptable.

If you fail to announce a Provisional Ball the next ball hit is now in play.

Make sure you ;
1. Announce your intention to hit a provisional ball
2. Mark it differently from the original
3. Hit it before going ahead to search

Weekly Rules Quiz

A player strikes his ball into high grass and properly plays a provisional ball. He prefers to continue play with the provisional ball but a fellow-competitor announces that the original ball is found in less than five minutes of search. The player refuses to identify the ball that is found. What is the ruling?

A.) He may continue with the provisional ball; he is not required to identify the ball that was found.

B.) He must abandon both balls and play another ball from the where his previous stroke was made.

C.) He must inspect the ball that was found; if a player has dishonestly not identified a ball that is his, the Committee should disqualify the player.
