"The Chase for the Cup is On"
On Saturday, April 30, 2016 members
of 5 different Golf Channel Am Tours descended upon the Southside of the
Hampton Roads area to contest for the title of Champion in 5 individual flights
for the Ironclad Open at Riverfront Golf Club.
Overlooking the waters where in
1862 the 2 famous Ironclad warships, the Monitor and the Merrimac did battle to
a draw, the Riverfront Golf Club stood up to the challenge posed by the Am Tour
players.
The course was in very good condition for spring time in Virginia and
drew very positive reviews from the competitors.
The weather was very cool with
overcast skies looming throughout the day, along with windy conditions lending
to further toughen the course. With some of the most undulating greens anywhere
to be found, the 6,735 yard Tom Doak design layout was a good early season test
for the 2016 season. The players were up for the challenge however as the
scores reflected as they were posted.
The Ironclad Open was the 1st
of the 8 tournament “Chesapeake Cup” series between the Baltimore, DC and
Richmond Tours, and bolstered by the strong play of the local Hampton Roads
players the Richmond Tour is off to a sizable lead in the season long show
down.
